A fourth Gospel opens today, and it starts before Bethlehem, before Genesis: in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Then the sentence on which everything turns: the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory. John spent a lifetime with Jesus and began his account here. Begin here with him.
Jephthah's tragedy came from a terrible theology: he bargained with God as if favor had to be purchased, and the Spirit had already come on him before the vow left his lips. John's prologue is the permanent correction: God's movement toward us is all gift, grace upon grace, the Word volunteering into flesh, light arriving unpurchased.
