The rebuilt temple looked pitiful next to Solomon's, and everyone knew it. Small budget, small footprint, small crowd. Into that embarrassment God asks a question that has steadied discouraged builders ever since: who dares despise the day of small things?

David wrote today's psalm in a cave, the least promising room he ever occupied, and the throne still came. Zerubbabel stood over a foundation that made old men weep for the past, and the capstone still went up. So do not audit your life by size. The hidden faithfulness, the modest ministry, the prayer nobody hears, these are lampstand oil, supplied straight from God. Despising the day of small things is refusing a gift while it is still being wrapped. Keep building. The hands that began the work are the hands that will finish it.
