Tonight, much of the world rehearses carols about a newborn King. The reading in front of you was written five centuries before Bethlehem, and it is already keeping the same watch.

It is Christmas Eve. Come to the Word the way you would wait at a window the night before a homecoming: quiet, expectant, certain that someone dearly loved is on the way. Anticipation is its own kind of worship.

Tomorrow the church celebrates a birth. Today's readings explain why it matters. Zechariah crowns a priest named Joshua and points past him to the Branch, one person holding both offices, ruling and interceding at once. Revelation hears heaven singing Moses and the Lamb in the same breath, every rescue God ever ran gathered into one song.

This is what arrives in the manger: not a new idea, but the convergence of every old promise. A King to govern you and a Priest to stand for you, wearing one face. If Christmas has felt more like logistics than wonder this year, let Zechariah reset it. God had been sketching this gift for five hundred years.
