God asks a prophet to live the sermon today: go, marry a woman who will break your heart, and love her the way I love Israel. Hosea obeys, names his children as warnings, and then does the unthinkable: buys his unfaithful wife back from the block for fifteen shekels and some barley.

This is the gospel with a receipt attached. You were the one repurchased. Read accordingly.

Fifteen shekels and some barley: half the price of a slave, paid by a husband for his own wife, because love kept a claim her wandering could not cancel. Hosea's marriage is the Bible's most uncomfortable portrait of God, deliberately, so no one could mistake divine love for detached approval. He buys back what already belonged to Him.

John writes so that you may know you have eternal life, and Hosea shows what the knowing rests on: not your record of faithfulness but His record of pursuit, troubled valleys turned into doors of hope. The snare is broken. The bride is home. Stay.
