Today you overhear something almost too intimate for print: God arguing with Himself about Israel. How can I give you up, Ephraim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. I am God, and not a man, and I will not carry out my fierce anger.

Hosea ends with the door wide open: return, and I will heal your waywardness and love them freely. This is the heart the whole Bible has been revealing. Stand close today.

Out of Egypt I called my son: Matthew heard Hosea 11 and saw Jesus, the true Israel retracing the family's steps and getting them right. But stay a moment in the original scene: God teaching a toddler nation to walk, bending down to feed them, and then, at the height of their betrayal, refusing to be the kind of god who gives up. I am God, and not a man.

Every prodigal calculation assumes God's patience works like ours. Hosea 11 is the correction: His compassion is aroused precisely where our logic expects wrath. Return is still the whole assignment. Healing and free love are the posted terms. Come home before Christmas.
