John the Baptist, the man who baptized Jesus and heard heaven speak, sits in a prison cell and sends the question he never expected to ask: are You the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?

If faith has ever wobbled in you, today's readings are a safe room. A doubting prophet, a terrified patriarch, a psalmist counting the days, and a God gentle with all three.

Notice how Jesus handles His doubting cousin. No shame, no lecture, just evidence and a blessing: blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of Me. Then, the moment the messengers leave, He turns to the crowd and praises John in the highest terms He ever used for a man. Honest doubt did not cost John one ounce of Jesus' esteem.

So bring the wobble. Pray like Jacob, holding God to His own promises while your knees shake. Count the how-longs like David, all four of them, and still hang your weight on the but: but I trust in Your unfailing love. Faith is not the absence of the question. It is where you take it.
