A man wrestles with God all night by a river and comes away with two souvenirs: a new name and a limp. Both mark him for the rest of his life.

Then Jesus makes the counteroffer of the ages: come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Some seasons are wrestling and some are rest. Today's reading holds both.

Jacob got his blessing by hanging on through the longest night of his life, and he limped away from it. Real encounters with God tend to leave marks. But listen to what he had to say first: my name is Jacob. The deceiver finally said his own name out loud, and God gave him a new one.

Jesus' invitation runs the same river in reverse: you do not have to pin God down to be blessed; you have to come weary and honest. Take My yoke, He says, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart. Say your real name. Bring your real exhaustion. The new name and the rest are given, not won.
