Isaiah's description of the Messiah gets quoted in full today, and one line stands guard over every fragile person who ever loved God: a bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out.

Genesis, meanwhile, carries grief in its arms, a beloved wife dying on the roadside, a father buried by his sons. Read today knowing the Lord of the Sabbath is gentle with the bruised.

Rachel died on the road with her son's name still on her lips, and Jacob set up a pillar and kept walking, because grief and covenant travel together more often than we admit. Into exactly that kind of world, Matthew announces the Servant's manner: no shouting, no quarreling, no breaking of what is already bruised.

Some of you are the bruised reed today; some of you are sitting next to one. Take the Servant's approach as both comfort and curriculum: Jesus handles fragile faith without snapping it, and He expects His people to do the same. In His name the nations will put their hope. The wick still smolders. He will fan it, not pinch it.
