A seventeen-year-old with big dreams gets thrown into a pit by his brothers and sold for twenty shekels. His story looks over. It is barely beginning.

Today's psalm sings the deeper pattern: You will not abandon me to the realm of the dead. And Jesus points to Jonah's three days as the sign of His own. Pits, in God's economy, keep turning into doorways.

Nothing about the cistern looked providential from inside it. His brothers sat down to a meal beside it, and the caravan headed away from home. Yet this pit is the first mile of a road that ends with Joseph saving the very brothers who dug it. God was not absent in chapter 37. He was early.

Psalm 16 gives the pattern its anthem, and Jesus gives it His body: three days in the heart of the earth, then a morning. If you are in a pit chapter, the plot is not over. The God who makes known the path of life has walked it Himself, straight through the grave and out. Boundary lines can still fall in pleasant places.
