Twenty years after the cistern, the brothers stand in an Egyptian hall and their buried guilt finally speaks: surely we are being punished because of our brother. They have carried it everywhere, all this time.

Guilt does not decompose; it waits. Today's readings are about what God does with surfaced guilt, and the psalm supplies the image: He reached down and drew me out of deep waters.

The brothers' guilt surfaced the moment trouble squeezed them, twenty years fresh, word for word. That is how unconfessed things behave. But notice what is quietly happening around their guilt: Judah, who once proposed selling Joseph, now offers himself as guarantee for Benjamin. Grace has been working on these men underground.

And notice Joseph, weeping in the next room while setting a table for the men who sold him. It is a portrait of where this story is headed and of the God who runs it: the wronged one, preparing a feast, waiting for honesty to finish its work. If old guilt surfaced in you today, do not push it back down. Deep waters are exactly what He reaches into.
