Tonight in Egypt, families will eat standing up, sandals on, staffs in hand, while lamb's blood dries on their doorframes. God's promise hangs on one sentence: when I see the blood, I will pass over you.

In Matthew, Jesus explains His own mission in the same vocabulary: the Son of Man came to give His life as a ransom for many. The two readings are one story. Read them that way.

The Passover households were not saved by their sincerity, their bloodline, or the quality of their packing. They were saved by a mark they trusted enough to stand under: when I see the blood, I will pass over you. Judgment fell on Egypt's certainties and passed over a doorway.

Jesus picks up the vocabulary on purpose: a ransom for many, His life for ours, blood that a holy God sees and honors. The vineyard parable guards the doctrine from our meritocracy: latecomers get the full wage, and grumbling at grace misreads the Owner. Stand under the blood today, gratefully, and serve like the One who paid it.
