Abraham stands in the road and negotiates with God over a doomed city, lowering the number from fifty righteous to ten, and God patiently accepts every counteroffer. Prayer, it turns out, has always been a conversation.

Jesus makes it a standing invitation: ask, seek, knock. Bring your boldest requests to today's reading. The door is designed to be knocked on.

Abraham's prayer for Sodom is stunning for what God permits: a man standing in the road, respectfully haggling with the Judge of all the earth, and being heard at every step. Jesus explains why that scene is not scandalous: your Father gives good gifts to those who ask Him. Boldness in prayer is not presumption. It is family privilege.

So pair the two commands of the day: seek first the kingdom, and ask, seek, knock. The order guards the asking; kingdom-first hearts do not pray like Lot's wife lived, craned backward toward Sodom. Stand where Abraham stood, facing God with a city on your heart, and intercede for the people you love.
