Romans presses past every badge today: a person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly... No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit.

Membership, heritage, ritual, all good gifts, none of them the thing itself. God is after the interior. In Chronicles, even David's census sin becomes a story of a heart laid bare and an altar bought at full price.

Romans 3 will ask what advantage religion gives if hearts decide everything, and today's answer already stands: privileges are real, God's words, God's covenants, but they are trusts, not talismans. The Spirit's surgery goes beneath every badge, producing people whose praise comes from God, the only Audience whose review matters.
