Buried in Leviticus is one of the most radical economic ideas ever written: every fiftieth year, debts released, land returned, slaves freed, everyone home. They called it Jubilee, and it began with a trumpet on the Day of Atonement.

Mark shows Jesus blessing children and unsettling a rich man in the same afternoon. Freedom and possessions are today's themes. Hold yours loosely.

Jubilee said no loss is permanent in the land of the LORD: the trumpet would sound, and whatever slavery or debt or foreclosure had taken would come home. The rich man in Mark met Jubilee standing in front of him and could not let the trumpet sound over his own accounts.

The kingdom still runs on Jubilee physics: release what you hold, and you will find yourself held; receive it like a child, empty-handed, and it is yours. Somewhere in your life a fiftieth-year trumpet wants to blow, a debt to forgive, a grip to open, a person to set free. Let it sound.
