Luke gives us the only story from Jesus' boyhood: twelve years old, lost for three days, and found in the temple, astonishing the teachers. His first recorded words are a question: did you not know I had to be in My Father's house?

In Numbers, a new census counts a new generation on the edge of the land. Fresh starts and deep belonging, that is today's ground. Read like someone who knows whose house they belong in.

Two generations stand in today's reading: the counted army of Numbers, children of parents who died doubting, and the twelve-year-old in the temple who knows exactly whose He is. The wilderness question and the temple question are the same question: do you know the house you belong to?

Anna answers it with her whole biography, decades of showing up, worshiping night and day, rewarded with a glimpse of redemption in a child's face. Belonging is built like that, presence upon presence. Spend some deliberate time in your Father's house today, whatever room of it you can reach, and let the belonging settle deeper.
