Moses asks the new generation a question meant to astonish: what other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to Him?

In Luke, a Roman centurion banks everything on that nearness working at a distance: say the word, and my servant will be healed. Nearness and authority, today's two wonders. Pray like both are true, because both are.

The centurion understood something about authority that astonished Jesus: a true word does not weaken with distance. He never asked for a house call; he asked for a command, and his servant was healed from across town. Moses had told Israel the same wonder centuries early: this God is near whenever we pray, no pilgrimage required, no idol needed.

Put the two together and pray accordingly. The God who sets the lonely in families is near enough to hear you whisper and authoritative enough that His word carries to any address, the hospital room, the wayward child, the far country. Say the need. He can say the word.
