To the people who had believed him, Jesus makes a promise with conditions and consequences: if you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Free is a strong word for people who insist they were never slaves. Saul, meanwhile, becomes a portrait of the un-free: successful, celebrated, and eaten alive by jealousy. Choose your master carefully today.

Saul had the throne, the army, and the acclaim, and was owned by a song he could not stop replaying. Jealousy is slavery with good scenery: every spear he threw at David was thrown by his own chains. Meanwhile the shepherd he hated kept rising, because freedom, in this story, belongs to the one the LORD is with.

Jesus locates real emancipation precisely: hold to His teaching, know the truth, be freed by the Son, the I AM who predates Abraham. Not freedom from all masters, but freedom under the right one. Ask honestly what owns you lately, comparison, resentment, fear of bad news, and bring it to the Son. Whom He sets free is free indeed.
