David wants to build God a house, and God reverses the offer with one of Scripture's greatest promises: the LORD Himself will establish a house for you. Your throne will be established forever.
David's response is to go in, sit before the LORD, and pray the only fitting prayer: who am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? Sit like that today.
David sat down before the LORD, which may be the most underrated posture in Scripture: not performing, not petitioning first, just marveling. Who am I, that You have brought me this far? Covenant grace had outrun every ambition he had, promising a forever throne that would one day seat Jesus, great David's greater Son.
And through that Son comes the promise David could not yet imagine: God not merely with His people but in them, the Advocate, the Spirit of truth, peace the world cannot counterfeit.
