I am the vine; you are the branches, Jesus tells His friends on the last night. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
Today also records what un-remaining looks like: David, home from the battle he skipped, on a roof, at the worst possible hour. Stay attached. Everything depends on it.
Mephibosheth at the king's table shows covenant kindness at its best; the rooftop shows a covenant man detached from his post, his purpose, and his God, and drifting into catastrophe one small consent at a time. Nobody falls like David fell while actively abiding; the branch dried a while before it broke.
So take the vine image as daily practice, not poetry: His words remaining in you, prayer flowing back, love for His people as the fruit, the Gardener's pruning accepted. Apart from Me you can do nothing is not a threat but a diagnosis, and its inverse is glorious: remain, and much fruit is a promise. Stay on the vine today, hour by hour.
