James diagnoses every quarrel you have ever had in one move: what causes fights among you? Your desires that battle within you. Then he writes the shortest path home in the Bible: come near to God and he will come near to you.
Submit, resist, come near, humble yourself, and be lifted. Today's reading is less to understand than to do.
James traces every conflict to an interior war: desires fighting inside you enlist the people around you. Which means the peace treaty is signed inward first, submit, resist, come near, humble yourself, four moves that end most external battles before breakfast.
And the nearness promise is bilateral: come near to God and he will come near to you, the relational version of Ezekiel's measured temple, God specifying exactly how close He intends to dwell. The cornerstone the builders rejected now holds the whole approach open. This very day, as the psalm says. Come near in it.
