The exiles have a proverb that lets everyone off the hook: the parents ate sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge. God cancels it today: the one who sins is the one who dies, and every soul is mine.

Then the astonishing self-disclosure: I take no pleasure in the death of anyone. Repent and live! Today, responsibility and mercy arrive holding hands.

Ezekiel 18 removes two hiding places at once: blame the ancestors, and despair of change. Nobody inherits your guilt, and nobody is locked into their record; turning is always live. And underneath the accounting beats the disclosure that changes everything: God pleads with people not to die. The Judge is rooting for the defendant.

The invitation, get a new heart and a new spirit, sounds impossible as a command, which is why God later promises to do the installing Himself. For now, hold the pairing: full responsibility, zero fatalism, and a God whose stated preference is your life. Repent and live is an invitation with His whole heart behind it.
