Today Jeremiah goes down into a cistern, lowered by ropes into the mud, left to starve for preaching what God said. And an African palace official named Ebed-Melek risks everything to pull him out, with old rags to pad the ropes.

Faithfulness sometimes lands you in the pit, and God's rescues often wear unexpected faces. Watch for both in your own story.

Ebed-Melek is in the Bible for one afternoon of courage and one detail of kindness: the rags. He could have just dropped ropes. He thought about armpits. God noticed, and later promises this foreigner his life as a reward for trusting. Heaven keeps records of padding.

Contentment, Paul's great gain, is what made both men free: Jeremiah could preach from a cistern because he needed nothing Zedekiah could give, and Ebed-Melek could defy the court because he feared God more than officials. People with their hope set on God are dangerously hard to control.
