A young man in a small town gets the terrifying honor of hearing God's voice call his name, with a resume objection ready: I am too young. God's answer starts earlier than his birthday: before I formed you in the womb I knew you.
Jeremiah begins today, forty years of hard obedience. It starts where all callings start, with who God says you are.
Judah's sin gets a plumbing diagnosis: they traded a spring for cisterns they chiseled themselves, and the cisterns cracked. Every anxiety Paul addresses in Philippians 4 is a cracked cistern leaking, some self-made container for security that cannot hold what we pour into it.
The alternative in both readings is the same source. Jeremiah was known before he was formed; you were too. Peace that guards hearts is not achieved but received, through prayer with thanksgiving. Stop patching the cistern this week. Walk back to the spring. It never stopped flowing.
