Two officials get one verse each in Isaiah today: Shebna, who carved himself a grand tomb while the city tottered, and Eliakim, whom God fastens like a peg in a firm place, a father to Jerusalem.

History remembers surprisingly little of what we build for ourselves, and Scripture remembers exactly what we build for others. Read today asking what your position is actually for.

Shebna spent his influence carving a tomb. Eliakim spent his holding a door open, and God fastened only one of them in place. The difference was direction: a position used for self versus a position used as shelter. The peg holds because of what hangs on it.

Galatians 3 asks the same question of your spiritual life. You began by the Spirit, received and rested; are you now finishing by flesh, striving and self-carving? Grace does not switch fuels halfway. The way in is the way on: believe God, and let Him do the fastening.
